    • The Proficiency Illusion by John Cronin, Michael Dahlin, Deborah Adkins, G. Gage Kingsbury, 10/04/2007 PDF version "The Proficiency Illusion" reveals that the tests that states use to measure academic progress under the No Child Left Behind Act are creating a false impression of success, especially in reading and especially in the early grades.

    • The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century is a best-selling book by Thomas L. Friedman analyzing the progress of globalization with an emphasis on the early 21st century. Friedman derives his title from the expression "a flat playing field," denoting a competitive environment where both teams compete on equal terms (e.g., on an uneven playing field, one team would have the difficult task of running uphill while the other would have the easier task of running downhill). The book was first released in 2005, was later released as an "updated and expanded" edition in 2006, and yet again released with additional updates in 2007 as "further updated and expanded: Release 3.0."  You can find this book at Barnes and Noble, Amazon and any number of used book stores.

    • Is America Falling Off the Flat Earth?  Indicators of trends in these fields (science and technology) are, at best, highly disconcerting. While many factors warrant urgent attention, the two most critical are these: (1) America must repair its failing K-12 educational system, particularly in mathematics and science, in part by providing more teachers qualified to teach those subjects, and (2) the federal government must markedly increase its investment in basic research, that is, in the creation of new knowledge.  Only by providing leading-edge human capital and knowledge capital can America continue to maintain a high standard of living—including providing national security—for its citizens.
